Johnny Sapinoso

I’m Johnny, I started this group.

I met gymnastics at a young age. I practiced into my teens and taught both competitive children and recreational adults for several years.

After observing how differently adults acquired skills compared to talented children, I became interested in how to develop processes inside of gymnastics that would work regardless of age or level of talent.

The next question was how to develop processes, regardless of what the process sought to develop. What if we seek to develop not specific skills, but learning itself; and what is learning?

This line of inquiry eventually led me to movement practice. Or rather: movement practice is how this line of inquiry lives inside of me.

In 2011, I met Ido Portal, and joined the founding Movement Culture team. Working alongside him and the team deepened my inquiry. For a decade (until 2021), I studied closely with the team, contributed and assisted with research, developed materials, led workshop tours around the world, and over the years helped support hundreds of online students.

In 2018 I moved to San Francisco and started a group here and I’ve been sharing with the group through local classes, and worldwide through events + online studies ever since.

A practice is shared, a technique or a method is taught. I teach when needed, but I’m learning to mostly share.
